Oxford Student PEN committee member Dom Davies has written a brilliant review of No Enemies. No Hatred, a volume of selected essays and poems by Liu Xiaobo,¬†for the Oxonian Review. You may remember that at the launch of Oxford Student PEN in June 2012 we took a campaign action on behalf of Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel Prize-winning Chinese poet and democracy activist¬†who has been under house arrest with his wife since December 2008. Now, we commend Dom’s review, “Gripping the Prison Bars“, to you, and we encourage you to sign the petition which Desmond Tutu and more than 130 other Nobel laureates have instigated to call for Liu Xiaobo’s release.

The past two weeks we have been writing letters to, and on behalf of, Enoh Meyomesse. Meyomesse is a Cameroonian poet, activist, politician and blogger who was sentenced to 7 years in prison for the supposed theft and sale of 78 grams of gold on 27 December 2012 in a prosecution that English PEN believes to have been politically motivated. You can find out more about the details of his prosecution and imprisonment here.

We would encourage you to send your own letters and emails of protest. Find out how here.

We have also been translating Meyomesse’s poetry in order raise awareness of his work, so if you are interesting in translation from the French, come join next week, 11am-12pm upstairs in the Turl Street Kitchen.
