About & Contact

Oxford Student PEN was set up in 2012 in order to campaign within and outside the University of Oxford for two basic human rights: the freedom to write and the freedom to read. This simple slogan encompasses a wide range of causes: campaigns for the freedom of expression, promotion and support of literature in translation, raising awareness of writers and activists in prison, working with refugee and migrant groups here in Oxford, and generally standing up where even the right to free speech is threatened, while at the same time recognizing that this is a privilege not to be abused.  All these causes are of course those long promoted by English PEN, and Oxford Student PEN is part of a growing network of student PEN groups in the UK that are working together on these campaigns. We run a series of events, seminars, and readings throughout the academic year, and this blog is where we hope to communicate and hear from others around the world. Keep an eye out for upcoming news and events, and send us an email if you want to get in touch.
